DUNBARTONSHIRE'S parliamentarians have vowed to stand up for Scotland amid “absolute uncertainty” due to the UK’s coming departure from the EU.
Gil Paterson MSP, Martin Docherty-Hughes MP and John Nicolson MP are appealing to the public to join them at two public meetings this weekend.
It comes as the Scottish National Party embarks on its greatest ever listening exercise, where it looks to gather the views of at least two million Scots by St Andrew’s Day, November 30.
As a result, the parliamentarians are looking to engage with the public in Milngavie and Clydebank in bid to bring some certainty amid turbulent political times.
Mr Paterson, the MSP for Clydebank and Milngavie, said: “These are ambiguous times and across the world we are seeing the global political establishment rocked. Martin and I want to try and bring some clarity on what the Scottish Government and Scottish National Party is doing to stand up for the people of Scotland.
“After Brexit, EU nationals were left worried about their place in Scotland, and many still are. I hope we can bring some assurance on November 27, in person, that we are working hard on their behalf. I encourage the people of Clydebank to come along and make themselves heard amid these times of absolute uncertainty.”
Mr Docherty-Hughes, the MP for West Dunbartonshire, added: “Where Gil will be giving an update from a Holyrood perspective, I will shine a light on what’s been happening in Westminster, with regards to Scotland’s place in Europe now. More importantly, I’d like to hear from as many constituents as possible.
“It’s critical that I understand exactly what my constituents’ concerns are to allow me to provide the communities of West Dunbartonshire with effective representation.
“The United Kingdom government is in complete disarray – what is going on in Westminster in relation to Brexit is a complete shambles. It has been a year of political upheaval, so Gil and I will outline how your competent and consistent SNP MPs and MSPs are working on concert, guarding Scotland’s interests.”
Mr Nicolson, MP for East Dunbartonshire, said: “I am keen to hear from my constituents in East Dunbartonshire what they think about Brexit, and what they want the Scottish Government to do next.
"Here in East Dunbartonshire we voted heavily against leaving the European Union, and Parliament has asked the First Minister to explore all options to retain Scotland's membership.
"But how should that be done? Can we be in both the UK and the EU even if England leaves?
"I want to hear everyone's views. And I will report back my impressions of the preparations Westminster is making for this seismic event.”
