CLYDEBANK’S MSP has welcomed thousands of job hunters to his employment fair in the new Clydebank Leisure Centre.
Gil Paterson has hailed the scenes as “incredible” as hundreds queued up outside the venue on the banks of the River Clyde on Wednesday March 22.
More than 40 employers with vacancies to fill had been gathered by the MSP in conjunction with the DWP and West College Scotland.
Gil said: “The scenes at the employment fair I hosted were absolutely incredible – thousands of people pouring in and hundreds more queueing outside. One guest remarked it was likely the first time since the closure of the yards so many had come to this part of the Clydeside.
“I very much hope it will make a difference to some people’s lives and perhaps send them in a new positive direction with a better livelihood. That is what is the essence of being an MSP or MP, giving back to the communities who have elected you.
“The event has been so successful and supported by businesses, the public sector and voluntary sector. You could not have wished for a better mix of employers engaging with the constituents you represent.
“The team behind this incredibly successful event should be thanked, including those in the DWP, West College Scotland and Clydebank Leisure Centre. The event was very well managed on the day and in the lead-up to it.
“I hope this event can be built on and brought to Clydebank at least one every year – because clearly there is enough interest from both job hunters and employers. The whole event was an experience I found very humbling.”
The event was held from 10.30am to 12.30pm at the new Clydebank Leisure Centre which is due to open on March 31.
